High US Prescription Drug Prices Are Here to Stay A two-pack of EpiPen sold for $100 in 2009. Since then, the price has risen approximately 500%, give or take a bit depending on the selling pharmacy.
And the prices of other prescription drugs are similarly spiraling out of control. So how did we get here?
A report released earlier today in the Journal of the American Medical Association took a deep look at this issue and concluded that these prices are based on "what the market will bear."
There are several reasons behind this. For starters, new drugs get an exclusive, for better or worse, and this allows the companies that develop them to set their own prices. The US also has little negotiating power when it comes to setting drug prices.
It's also difficult to bring in generic competition, which means alternatives to these high-priced drugs are scarce.
Furthermore, there's little research that stacks competing drugs against one another.
But drug companies don't want to lower their prices, even in the face of public rage, because they're afraid that doing so would cause a chain reaction.
